Basilicata – whose coat of arms shows four blue waves to symbolize its four main rivers – is a region in Southern Italy known for its water sources, which also quench the thirst of neighboring Puglia, Campania and Calabria. Although ISPRA also recorded 18.4% less water availability throughout the country in 2023, in line with the trend of the last thirty years and with studies on the effects of global warming, the water crisis afflicting the region cannot be attributed solely to drought.
